Annual Research Conference on Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development

The annual conference put on by the PopPov Research Network took place in Cape Town, South Africa, January 14-17, 2010. The meeting brought together the world’s most prominent researchers on population and economic development, with a particular emphasis on African economics researchers and those conducting research in Africa.
 

26th Annual IUSSP International Population Conference

The 26th Annual IUSSP International Population Conference was held in Marrakesh, Morocco on September 27-October 2, 2009. The conference featured prominent speakers on an number of issues related to population studies, and included members of the PopPov Research Network. Amongst others, Tamara Fox from the Hewlett Foundation chaired a session on the Economic Impact of Reproductive Health. Eighth International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH)

The 8th International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) took place in Nairobi, Kenya in October, 2009. It was organized by the International Society for Urban Health in partnership with the African Population and Health Research Center and the Government of the Republic of Kenya. The theme was "Meeting Urban Health Needs through Innovative Research, Policies, and Interventions." Participants discussed strategies on reproductive, maternal, and child health issues, as well as housing, water, sanitation, and other sub-themes related to urban health.

2008 Global Teams of Research Excellence Grants Awarded

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Population Reference Bureau announced the winners of the 2008 Global Teams of Research Excellence in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development Award. The winning research teams will contribute significantly to understanding the relationship between health and economic development, and will inform policymaking on family planning and reproductive health topics so as to expand economic opportunities for women.
 

Second Annual Research Conference on Population Impacts on Economic Development

The Second Annual Research Conference on Population Impacts on Economic Development was held on December 8-9, 2007 in Arusha, Tanzania. The workshop represented the second annual gathering of a new international network of researchers on PED. Invitees included experts from around the world, with a particular emphasis on African economics researchers and those conducting PED research in Africa.

Research Proposal Writing Workshop for New Scientists

The first Hewlett/PRB Research Program on Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development Research Proposal Writing Workshop for New Scientists was held in Arusha, Tanzania, on December 7-8, 2007. New scholars gained skills in preparing research proposals for obtaining funding from a variety of sources. They also met and networked with other new scholars interested in population, reproductive health, and economic development in Africa. The facilitator was Aron Primack, M.D., MPH, program director of The Fogarty International Center, U.S. National Institutes of Health. Workshop Presenters were Aron Primack, "Proposal Writing Basics;" Tamara Fox (Hewlett Foundation), "Tips and Tricks for Getting Funding;" Nyovani Madise (University of Southampton), "Getting Your Research Funded in Africa."

In 2007 and 2006 the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Population Reference Bureau awarded Dissertation Fellowships in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development to Ph.D candidates whose proposals stood out as the best in a strong field of applications.
