Tenth Annual Research Conference on Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development

  • September 2016
  • Event
The Tenth Annual Research Conference on Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development will be held September 8th and 9th, 2016 at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, DC. This serves as the annual meeting for the Population and Poverty Research Network (PopPov), a group of academic researchers and funders from around the globe interested in how population dynamics affect economic outcomes. Selected papers will advance knowledge, addressing the themes relevant to the PopPov inquire into how population dynamics and reproductive health affect economic development.

The Tenth Annual Conference marks the beginning of a new phase for PopPov. For ten years, the Hewlett Foundation, the Population Reference Bureau, and other partners have initiated and nurtured the PopPov network. In this new phase, the conference will be organized and hosted by network members directly, and participants will self-fund their conference registration and travel, with limited availability of travel awards.

Conference Themes
The conference scientific program steering committee invites paper submissions from both members and non-members of the PopPov network. Submitted papers should address important issues at the intersection of population, reproductive health and economic prosperity. We strongly encourage studies that are policy relevant, can make causal connections, and provide insight for programmatic or policy changes.

Some areas of particular interest for this year’s conference include:
  • Links between fertility and economic outcomes (labor force, consumption, savings)
  • Intrahousehold bargaining and economic outcomes
  • Impacts of interventions on marriage, fertility, health and empowerment
  • Intergenerational spillovers (for example, the impact on children of interventions that target young women)
  • Transitions into adulthood
  • Aging
  • Migration
  • Urbanization
  • Measurement challenges in economic demography research
